Our Vision
The mission of Refugee REACH is to improve refugee health.
There are over 36 million refugees and 110 million forcibly displaced people worldwide. With decades of experience in the global refugee crisis, our team at Refugee REACH has personally witnessed the massive health disparities faced by refugees. A shortage of research contributes to poor health outcomes in refugees.
The vision of Refugee REACH is to change the narrative of refugee health to empower refugees to determine their own health outcomes.
Our historical initiative, the Refugee and Asylum seeker Health Initiative (RAHI), was founded by Dr. Fatima Karaki at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 2016. RAHI’s mission was to improve refugee health by fostering research in forcibly displaced populations globally.
While RAHI enjoyed tremendous growth at UCSF, our vision evolved beyond academia. To meet growing demand, we created an independent nonprofit organization named Refugee REACH: Refugee Research Equity and Collaboration in Health.

What Sets Us Apart
Though many short-term relief-oriented refugee organizations exist, Refugee REACH is unique in its focus on data, evidence-based care, efficiency, sustainability, and long-term outcomes. We value research equity and empower refugees to set their own research agenda and priorities.
Our mentorship of refugee researchers bolsters their careers, builds research capacity, and most importantly, gives refugees the agency to shape their own health outcomes. Dissemination and implementation of our research findings both raises awareness and demonstrates best practices to improve refugee health.
